Stone age settlements were sited at salt springs, caravans trekked deserts trading gourmet salt ounce-for-ounce for gold, and roman soldiers were paid in salt. In the 16th and 17th centuries The East India Company traded salt in highly lucrative and tightly controlled trade, whose possession and control led to wars being fought.
